Middlesex Boys’ Soccer Earns Post Season Awards After Storied Season

1/17/2019

After a storybook ending to an undefeated season (18-0-3), claiming the ISL crown, and winning the NEPSAC Class B Championship, the Middlesex Boys' Varsity Soccer team was hardly a stranger to postseason accolades. The team earned three ISL-All League, three ISL Honorable mentions, four All-NEPSAC honors, two Massachusetts Prep School All-State honors, NEPSSA New England Junior and Senior All-Star Game selections, and were ranked #6 by Top Drawer Soccer's End-of-Season Prep Top Ten National Ranking.

In addition, the New England Soccer Journal published their annual Prep Boys Year End Awards in late November, highlighting junior Anyolo Makatiani as Breakout Player of the Year. Makatiani scored 13 goals and two assists this fall, including the game-winner vs. Rivers in the NEPSAC Championship.

Head Coach Ken Risley was awarded New England Prep Boys' Soccer Coach of the Year as the team claimed its first ever ISL and New England Championships. Risley focused on the importance of team culture and designed a system to utilize and highlight the strengths of his players, which in turn has led to a 32-match unbeaten streak against ISL opponents.

The New England Soccer Journal also recognizes the Prep Boys First, Second, and Third Best XI for 2018. Earning Third XI honors for the Zebras were sophomore goalkeeper Alfonso De Vito, who posted a 0.57 goals against average, senior defender Justin D'Alessandro, who aided in the Zebras 11 shutouts this fall, and senior midfielder Josh Quirk, who scored 13 goals and 19 assists on the season.

The Journal also highlights the Prep Boys Underclassman Best XI, made up entirely of freshmen and sophomores, who were big contributors, both on and off the field from the entire region. Alfonso De Vito was named to the goalkeeper position for his stellar play all season, including stopping South Kent in a penalty kick shootout in the NEPSAC Class B Semifinals. Sophomore Kwabena Kwakwa also earned Underclassman Best XI honors in the midfield, scoring seven goals and eight assists in the Zebras undefeated season.
