Rivers Girls' Varsity Soccer Claims 2015 ISL Championship

There have been nicer afternoons in Weston than Wednesday November 11, but for the Rivers girls’ varsity soccer team there haven’t been many better ones. The Red Wings notched a 4-0 victory over Noble & Greenough School to clinch their first outright ISL Championship.
In what amounted to a de facto championship game, the Red Wings (13-0-3) and Bulldogs played nearly 60 minutes of soccer before either team was able to find a breakthrough. With just over 20 minutes to play, Maggie McCabe ’16 found the back of the net to give the Red Wings the 1-0 lead and kicked off an impressive offensive performance over the final quarter of the game.
Maggie added a second goal before Tess Sussman ’18 and Aspen Pierson ’17 finished off the game. The Red Wings defense posted its thirteenth shutout of the season behind strong play from Brooke Heinsohn ’16 in goal and Liz Webber ’16, Tali Sprofera ’16, Christina Orr ’17, and Julia Gallotto ’19 across the back line.
This is the second consecutive league championship for the Red Wings after they claimed a share of the title last season. This is the fourth overall ISL Championship for Rivers under coach Susanna Donahue, but 2015 marks the first outright win after sharing the title in 2006, 2007, and 2014.
“This win was the culmination of an extremely gratifying season for the coaches and especially for the players,” Coach Donahue said. “Every single player contributed to the team’s success and the program’s first outright league title. It was amazing to watch them come together as a group and I couldn’t be more excited for them.”
With the regular season now over, the Red Wings will play in the NEPSAC Class B Tournament beginning next Wednesday, November 18. The tournament matchups will be released this Saturday evening.
