Belmont Hill's Desrosiers ’20 and Gomes ’20 Shine in National Track Competition
6/18/2019

Greg Desrosiers ’20 and Isaiah Gomes ’20 each returned recently from the New Balance National High School Track Championships in Greensboro, NC with much to be proud of.
Greg Desrosiers is an All-American, finishing 2nd in the Championship Decathlon, with a huge personal record of 6537 points. Meanwhile, Isaiah Gomes competed in the discus, finishing 13th in the Emerging Elite division, less than a foot off his personal best, less than a foot from making the finals.

“Greg has been competing at a national level in the decathlon for a few years now, though his performance this weekend was definitely a breakout result, as he PR'd by about 500 points,” says Coach Adam Harder. “Greg had several personal bests, decathlon personal bests, and to be the national runner-up at NBNO (New Balance National Outdoors) is quite an honor, particularly given that the young man who defeated him posted the second-best high school decathlon mark ever.”

Greg was in third place at the end of day one, and he was solid in all five of his events. Day two is a tricky one, Coach Harder notes, with both the discus and pole vault to get through. Greg jumped just shy of 13' in the pole vault, an overall personal record, got in a decent enough discus toss, and then had a huge PR in the javelin, and winning the javelin competition overall. In total, an amazing performance.

“For Isaiah's first experience at a national-level meet, he competed with great poise and focus, coming literally within inches of a personal best and qualifying for the eight-person finals,” says Coach Harder. “He has really come into his own this spring in the discus, improving impressively during our short New England season, and he is motivated to return and compete at nationals next spring.”
