Belmont Hill Wrestling Team Completes Historic Season with Strong National Showing
2/25/2019
After a dominant regular-season showing, the Belmont Hill wrestling team headed into the post-season with high aspirations and did not disappoint.
At the league championship Graves Kelsey Tournament, the team won the championship for the 4th consecutive year, the 12th time in 15 years, and 15th time overall. Six champions emerged from Belmont Hill including Luca Pontone, Harrison Shapiro, Shane Rockett, Jimmy Harrington, Matthew Smith, and Kailen Richards.
The following week the team headed to Greens Farms Academy in Connecticut for the New England championship. Facing tough competition throughout, the team finished as co-champions earning its second consecutive New England title and fifth in history. Champions were Harrison Shapiro, Luca Pontone, and Jimmy Harrington.
A week later, the team traveled to Lehigh University for the National Championships. Facing the strongest wrestling programs in the country, the team finished 13th overall, its highest ever placing. Three boys captured All-American honors, with Luca Pontone finishing third, and Jimmy Harrington and Harrison Shapiro both taking 8th place.Â
Coaches Bradley, Leonardis, Kaplan, and Davis expressed that while they are proud of the accomplishments of the team, they are even more proud of them as young men who represented the School so honorably.
